Ethereum (USDT) valued at $27 million was taken over the weekend by a hacker from a wallet connected to the Binance deployer, according to blockchain analyst ZachXBT.
The $27 million in loot was transferred to the exchanges FixedFloat and ChangeNow after being converted to ether (ETH). After that, all money was converted to bitcoin (BTC) using the THORChain bridge.
The victim’s wallet received ether from the Binance deployer in 2019 through two different wallets, according to on-chain data. “The user made a withdrawal from Binance, which was valid and authorised on our platform,” the data states. Regretfully, there was compromised information in the DeFi wallet that took the withdrawal. While this is outside of our scope of control, Binance’s security team is looking into the matter and we will provide assistance where we can,” a Binance spokesperson said
Creating smart contracts with a deployer wallet is possible. December 2020 saw the last activity on Binance’s deployer wallet.
Over the course of the year, THORChain has emerged as a hub for hacker activity. In June, hackers misused THORChain to hide their $35 million theft from Atomic Wallet, and last month, THORSwap placed its platform in maintenance mode following several trades linked to an FTX hack. The goal of hackers is frequently exchanges. Due to a hack that exposed the hot wallets of that exchange last week, Poloniex lost $114 million.
