FBI: North Korean hackers could attempt to sell $40 million in bitcoin

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warned on Tuesday that North Korean hackers might try to cash out stolen bitcoin (BTC) worth more than $40 million.The FBI said that the Lazarus Group, based in North Korea, and APT38 were responsible for a slew of cryptocurrency attacks earlier this year, including the theft of $60 million from payment processor Alphapo and the $100 million heist of Atomic Wallet.

The FBI identified the two organizations as the perpetrators of the $100 million-plus Horizon Bridge hack from the previous year in January.The FBI advised cryptocurrency companies against communicating with six wallets that were linked to the hacker groups and contained a combined total of 1,580 bitcoin ($41 million).

“The FBI will continue to expose and combat the DPRK’s use of illicit activities—including cybercrime and virtual currency theft—to generate revenue for the regime,” it said.
