Sales of Solana’s Saga phone may have just rebounded thanks to a meme token with a dog theme; some are currently selling for as much as $5,000, despite the device’s creators having previously labelled it a “failure.”
According to site data, a number of Saga phones have sold for as much as $2,000 each on the online marketplace eBay (EBAY). The majority of these phones are sold mostly by Americans, and they are described as “sealed and unopened.” A phone was sold for as much as $5,000, according to an earlier report from The Block.
Sales of Solana Saga phones increased last week as a result of some arbitrage traders seemingly pursuing an airdrop of 30 million BONK tokens, which is distributed to all phone owners. For a $599 phone, the airdrop was valued at over $700 at its peak last week.
Blockchain users adopted the dog-themed BONK early in November, and it quickly became popular, rising as much as 110% in a single day and reaching over 700% in a 30-day period.
That appeared to improve the Saga phone’s situation, as its previous poor sales raised doubts about its future.
In an interview at the time, Solana founder Anatoly Yakovenko stated, “We haven’t seen a tonne of signal whether that’s a compelling enough thing to sell 50,000 units.” “25,000 to 50,000 units, in my opinion, should give developers the impression that they have a devoted user base and force them to release applications.”
The phone was originally released for sale earlier this year, and in August, its $1,000 price was lowered to $599. Raj Gokal, a co-founder of Solana, posted last Friday that Saga has since sold out in the United States and the European Union.
