AI High-level Advisory Body for Global Governance is convened by the UN

A multi-stakeholder High-level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being led by the UN Secretary-General. As AI technologies spread globally, the initiative seeks to manage the risks and uncertainties that come with them while also maximising AI’s potential for humanity. The comprehensive approach analyses and advances suggestions for the international governance of AI in an effort to promote an inclusive culture on a global scale.
The Advisory Board is expected to include up to 38 professionals from various relevant fields around the world. The experts will come from civil society, the commercial sector, and the government, and they will all bring different viewpoints to the discussion on AI governance. It is anticipated that this gathering will actively participate in new and ongoing projects in conjunction with global organisations.
By doing this, it seeks to reconcile divergent viewpoints from various networks and stakeholder groups, guaranteeing a comprehensive conversation on AI governance.
Support for the Secretariat and activities of the Advisory Body, which is housed within the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology (OSET), is being mobilised by the UN. Supporters of this project will strengthen stakeholder collaboration on AI governance against the backdrop of new technological developments, facilitating improved AI governance globally.
Co-Chairs James Manyika, Senior Vice President of Google-Alphabet and President for Research, Technology, and Society, and Carme Artigas, Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence of Spain, lead this esteemed group. Renowned figures from a range of nations and industries make up the membership list, and they all contribute a wealth of expertise and experience.
Notable participants include Omar Sultan Al Olama, the United Arab Emirates’ Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence; Anna Abramova, the Director of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO)-University AI Centre; and Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI. With their combined knowledge of digital policy, technology, and AI governance, the Advisory Board is a powerful force behind international AI governance.
The UN’s action represents a significant step towards developing interdisciplinary knowledge to harmonise international AI governance with the SDGs and human rights. The Advisory Body’s multistakeholder, networked approach is intended to provide a range of viewpoints and options regarding the governance of AI for the benefit of society. It also emphasises how crucial it is to have an inclusive global strategy in order to successfully negotiate the complexities of AI governance in the face of a quickly changing technological environment. To sum up, the United Nations’ move to establish a High-level Advisory Body on AI demonstrates a proactive approach to creating a cogent international framework for AI governance.
