“Grok,” an AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk and his business xAI, is purported to be able to exceed OpenAI’s initial ChatGPT version in a number of academic exams.
According to Musk and xAI, the goal of developing Grok is to provide AI tools that will support humankind by fostering creativity and research, as they stated in a post on X (previously Twitter) on November 5. Grok’s real-time world knowledge through the X platform is a “unique and fundamental advantage,” according to Musk and the xAI team.
“It will also answer spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems,” Musk and xAI said. “Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humor!”
According to information released by xAI, the Grok-1 engine outperformed ChatGPT-3.5 in every exam conducted on it, including math and coding tasks. In none of the tests, though, did it perform better than OpenAI’s most sophisticated version, GPT-4.
“It is only surpassed by models that were trained with a significantly larger amount of training data and compute resources like GPT-4, Musk and xAI said. “This showcases the rapid progress we are making at xAI in training LLMs with exceptional efficiency.”
The AI startup said that Grok will be available for $16 a month on X Premium Plus. However, it is currently only available to a small group of American users.According to xAI, Grok is currently a “very early beta product” but should advance quickly over the coming week.
The xAI team promised to gradually add more security controls to make sure Grok isn’t misused.
“We believe that AI holds immense potential for contributing significant scientific and economic value to society, so we will work towards developing reliable safeguards against catastrophic forms of malicious use.”
“We believe in doing our utmost to ensure that AI remains a force for good,” xAI added.
Grok was introduced by the AI startup eight months after Musk established the business in March.
