Following an employee hack, Bitfinex users fall victim to a “minor” phishing attack.

Bitfinex emphasised that none of its systems were breached and that no client money was misplaced.

Exchange of cryptocurrency Bitfinex reported that one of its customer service representatives was compromised earlier this week, between October 30 and November 5, resulting in a “minor” information security incident. The company clarified in a statement on November 4 that although it sparked a wave of phishing attempts against Bitfinex users, not much was lost.

“A small percentage of our customer support boards, which contained outdated, partial, and incomplete information, were accessed by an individual or group under the guise of a customer support agent through phishing.”

Fortunately, the customer service representative’s access to supporting resources was restricted because they lacked “senior permissions” the firm added.

Bitfinex emphasised that no customer funds were lost and that none of its systems were breached. “There was no access to any server, wallet, or database infrastructure.” Added by Bitfinex

“At no time were customer assets on the platform at risk, nor was password information accessible. Most of the affected customer accounts were empty or inactive”.

Even though Bitfinex claimed that the problem has been “resolved,” they are still investigating the event and the compromised data and are contacting the impacted customers.

The company reported the problem to law enforcement, and it will cooperate with the investigating authorities to find the person responsible for the phishing attack.

We have a strong track record of securing successful convictions against individuals who have attempted to attack our operations in the past,” Bitfinex iterated.

Bitfinex required all employees to complete cybersecurity training and reviewed its security protocols on a regular basis, but the incident still occurred.

In Hong Kong, Bitfinex was established in 2012. Since 2013, Jean-Louis van der Velde has led the company as CEO. In CoinGecko’s “Trust Score” index, Bitfinex is positioned 17th out of all cryptocurrency exchanges. Over 800,000 people have visited its platform in the past month.
