Hacker on Poloniex Transfers $3.3 Million in Ether to Tornado Cash

According to blockchain data, a hacker who stole $125 million from Poloniex’s hot wallets in November delivered 1,100 ether (ETH) to Tornado Cash, an approved coin mixer.

After lying inert for 178 days, the ether, valued around $3.3 million, was transferred to Tornado Cash on Tuesday in increments of 100 ETH.

On April 30, the Poloniex hacker also sent 501 bitcoin (BTC) to an unidentified wallet, valued at $32 million. According to Arkham statistics, it still possesses $181 million worth of cryptocurrency spread across multiple blockchains.

With the Tornado Cash system, users can mix assets throughout several wallets for an extended amount of time, obscuring crypto tokens. The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned it in 2022, not long after North Korean hackers Lazarus used it to try to conceal money obtained from the $625 million Axie Infinity attack.

Elliptic, a blockchain security firm, reported in March that the Heco Bridge incident, which happened soon after the Poloniex hack, involved $12 million that Lazarus Group had laundered via Tornado Cash.
