A Bitcoin user who wishes to remain anonymous sent 26.9 Bitcoin worth $1.17 million to the genesis wallet, which was the first wallet ever created by the anonymous founder of the cryptocurrency, Satoshi Nakamoto.
On January 5 at 1:52 a.m. Eastern Time, a Bitcoin transaction took place. The money was transferred from a depleted wallet to the Genesis wallet, along with a $100 transaction fee—a significant increase over the standard. Initially, money was transferred from three wallets to twelve other wallets in order to fund the wallet. The majority of the money came from a wallet connected to Binance on the blockchain analytics platform Arkham Intelligence. Director at Coinbase Conor Grogan wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that the transaction is either someone burning over $1 million or Nakamoto waking up and depositing Bitcoin from Binance. Furthermore, Grogan hinted that the anonymous transfer might be a peculiar spot-Bitcoin exchange-traded fund marketing campaign.
Since Nakamoto vanished in December 2010, no money has been transferred from any of the wallets connected to him, including the genesis wallet. The funds in these wallets could still be under Nakamoto’s hands if they kept the private keys. At the time of Nakamoto’s disappearance, 50 Bitcoin had been mined and were stored in the Genesis wallet. Bitcoin users from all around the world celebrated the 14th anniversary of the cryptocurrency in different ways. Some chose to transfer Bitcoin to the address that held the rewards for mining the genesis block. By the end of 2023, the gifts had raised the wallet’s balance to 72 Bitcoin. After the most recent transaction, the balance is now 99.67 Bitcoin, or almost $4.3 million.
